The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires van Grady Hendrix is er zo eentje dat je van begin tot einde in één ruk wil uitlezen. Ik betrapte mezelf erop dat ik overdag aftelde tot ik eindelijk thuis was, comfortabel in de zetel kon kruipen en verder kon lezen. Dat zegt eigenlijk al genoeg.

Dit verhaal combineert het alledaagse leven van huisvrouwen met een duistere, occulte ondertoon die langzaam maar zeker onder je huid kruipt. Wat begint als een ogenschijnlijk rustige Southern community, verandert in een beklemmend en spannend verhaal waarin niets is wat het lijkt.

Hou je van het occulte? Van spanning die traag wordt opgebouwd maar je daarna niet meer loslaat? Dan is dit boek absoluut het lezen waard.

En laat dit ook meteen een waarschuwing zijn: onderschat nooit een groep huisvrouwen. Want als je je ooit hebt afgevraagd hoe ver moeders zouden gaan om hun kinderen te beschermen… dan krijg je hier een antwoord op.
