Boekreview: Mother’s Instinct

Soms belooft een verhaal spanning, maar blijft die helaas te lang op zich wachten.

Mother’s Instinct vertelt het verhaal van twee buurvrouwen die aanvankelijk een hechte vriendschap opbouwen. Ze delen het dagelijkse leven, vertrouwen elkaar en lijken elkaars veilige haven. Wanneer een ingrijpend familiedrama plaatsvindt, slaat de sfeer echter volledig om. Wat volgt is een steeds giftigere relatie, waarin wantrouwen en verwijten langzaam maar zeker de overhand nemen.

Hoewel het uitgangspunt veel potentieel heeft, wist het boek mij niet te grijpen. De schrijfstijl is erg uitvoerig, met lange beschrijvingen die het tempo eruit halen. Hierdoor voelt het verhaal langdradig aan en ontbreekt de spanning die je net bij dit soort psychologische verhalen verwacht. Tijdens het lezen had ik zelden het gevoel écht in het verhaal te zitten of het mee te beleven.

Pas in de allerlaatste pagina’s komt er eindelijk beweging in het verhaal, maar tegen die tijd was mijn aandacht al grotendeels verdwenen. Voor mij kwam die ontknoping simpelweg te laat om het boek alsnog te redden.

Mother’s Instinct is voor mij geen aanrader. Een interessant idee, maar te traag uitgewerkt en te weinig meeslepend om echt te blijven hangen.

Book Review: Mother’s Instinct

Sometimes a story promises suspense, but unfortunately keeps you waiting far too long.

Mother’s Instinct tells the story of two neighboring women who initially form a close friendship. They share their daily lives, confide in each other, and seem to become one another’s safe haven. However, when a devastating family tragedy occurs, everything changes. The atmosphere shifts completely, and what once felt warm and familiar slowly turns into something much darker. Their relationship becomes increasingly toxic, with suspicion and resentment gradually taking over.

Although the premise holds a lot of potential, the book failed to truly captivate me. The writing style is very detailed, with lengthy descriptions that slow down the pace of the story. As a result, the narrative feels drawn out, lacking the tension you would expect from this kind of psychological drama. While reading, I rarely felt fully immersed in the story or emotionally involved in what was happening.

Only in the final pages does the story finally gain momentum, but by then my attention had already faded. For me, the ending simply came too late to redeem the book.

Mother’s Instinct is not a book I would personally recommend. An interesting concept, but too slow-paced and not gripping enough to leave a lasting impression.
